John Young Buchanan FRSE FRS FCS (20 February 1844-16 October 1925) was a Scottish chemist, oceanographer and Arctic explorer. He was an important part of the Challenger Expedition. ==Life== He was born in Glasgow on 20 February 1844, the son of John Buchanan of Dowanhill, a relatively affluent landowner. His brother was the statesman Thomas Ryburn Buchanan.〔http://pubs.rsc.org/en/Content/ArticleLanding/1926/JR/jr9262900993#!divAbstract〕 He attended Glasgow High School and then studied Chemistry at Glasgow University. He also spent time in Europe studying at the universities of Marburg, Leipzig, Bonn and Paris. He graduated in 1863.〔http://www.royalsoced.org.uk/cms/files/fellows/biographical_index/fells_indexp1.pdf〕 His first role was as an assistant to Prof Alexander Crum Brown at Edinburgh University. In 1870 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was then living at the highly prestigious address of 10 Moray Place in Edinburgh's West End.〔Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Jan 1870〕 The Society awarded him their Keith Prize for 1885 to 1887. In 1873 he was chosen as the official chemist on the three year Challenger Expedition.
